Beef Stir Fry

Beef Stir Fry

I don’t normally cook beef at home but I saw a particularly nice piece of steak at the market the other day and couldn’t resist. I was going to just cook it up as a nice medium – medium rare steak but I decided to stretch it by putting it in a stir fry.

By adding all the veggies, I knew I’d have enough leftovers to bring for lunch tomorrow. You would be appalled if you knew what I’ve been eating for lunch at work this week.

INGREDIENTS
6 to 8 oz piece of steak
1 green bell pepper
1/2 onion
1 stalk celery
1 clove garlic
1 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp garlic salt
2 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp oyster sauce
1/2 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp oil

Beef Stir Fry Vegetables

Beef

DIRECTIONS
Slice the piece of beef into thin bite sized strips. Make sure to cut off any extra fat around the edges. Cut the onions into slivers and the green bell peppers and celery into small bite sized pieces.

In a pan lightly coated with oil, fry the beef with the onions and celery. Season these ingredients in the pan with garlic salt and pepper. When the beef is almost cooked, add in the garlic, green bell peppers, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Cook for just a couple more minutes until everything is cooked through.

NOTES
If you want some gravy in this dish, add some chicken or beef broth. About 1/2 to 2/3 cup would be good. Then thicken it with a cornstarch and water mixture (1 tsp cornstarch, 1/4 cup water). Let this boil for a couple minutes to thicken, then serve.

That looks awesome! I love using oyster sauce. :)

What did you cook your rice with to give it that color?

Hi Joy,
Thanks! That’s actually just plain brown rice in the background. :)

Hi kat,
It was so hard to turn that meat into stir fry instead of having a regular juicy broiled steak! It was good though, and having extra to bring for lunch today made it worth it. ;)

I love the added contrast of the black sesame seeds on this….you can’t go wrong with a beef, pepper, onion stirfry – ever! Which brings back some fond memories of my mom…she used to put an extra steak on the hibachi in order to make beef stir fry the next day. The grilled flavor was an added bonus, and since the steak was already partially cooked (she always cooked it medium-rare), it was a snap to put together for lunch or dinner. Man I gotta remember to make this for a summer get-together.

Hi rowena,
Your mom’s stir fry sounds so good – I can just imagine this made with hibachi grilled steak, mmmm!
