Eating Out: Sushi King - Midnight Special

Sushi King Spicy Tuna

The other night we went out to indulge in Japanese food again. Because it was a Friday, we wanted to go to Yanagi Sushi for our usual late night specials. However, when we got there at 11:40 pm, it was packed with a 40 minute wait! Yanagi is great but not “waiting around while you’re starving at midnight” great. So we quickly set off for our next late night choice: Sushi King.

Sushi King has a set late night menu as you can see. And like Yanagi, the special prices also start at 10:30 pm.

Sushi King Menu

First we started off with some drinks. (That’s not my beer, although I did taste it - very nice!) I’m usually just a green tea and water kind of girl.

Next came the miso soup. Sushi King serves a very hearty tonjiru type miso soup. This differs very much from the standard miso soup with tofu usually seen at Japanese restaurants. In Sushi King’s tonjiru miso soup I usually see ingredients like pork, carrots, daikon, onion, and konnyaku in my bowl.

My order for the evening was unagi with spicy tuna roll.

Our second order was the tempura and California roll combo. Typically we trade with each other so that we get lots of variety. So it would be more accurate to say that night I had an unagi, tempura, spicy tuna and California roll combo.

Did I mention we were starving? About half way through the combo platters, we realized that we’d still be hungry after finishing what we had on our plates. The solution? One more order of sushi! This one is a salmon and avocado roll, one of my favorites!

Hi noble pig,
“Yahoo!” is right. I don’t know what I would do without cheap late night Japanese food. :D

Hi kat,
You folks should stop by next time. They also have a really good early bird special if you want to eat at a normal hour. ;)

Hi Lisa,
I hope a late night spot opens near you soon! Actually, this place isn’t too near to us. But we don’t mind driving at night since there’s no traffic. :)

We like salmon too!! It’s always a toss up between salmon and asparagus/avocado. Las Vegas is strange… Japanese food is cheaper than Korean. This works out for me because we go out almost every week.

Hi Kristy,
You gotta tell us where these cheap Japanese restaurants are when we come visit! :D

11:40pm and PACKED?! That is so Honolulu, eh, Oahu in general. And then you have such an easy option of going to Sushi King. Lucky you, even on Kauai there’s only one place that can boast super late hours and that is Hamura’s Saimin in Lihue!

Hi rowena,
I know, I was surprised Yanagi was so packed. A concert or event must’ve just finished in town. It’s located really close to the Blaisdell Concert Hall/Arena.

And I never knew Hamura’s was open so late, that’s good for the Kauai folks. It’s getting harder and harder to find late night saimin options on Oahu. You know, the kind with just saimin, won ton min, and chicken sticks on the menu. :D

That looks like a tasty meal! My favorite restaurants to go out to are Japanese restaurants.
