Kunio Restaurant, Waikele

Kunio Sashimi

An evening of delicious food, great friends, and wonderful conversation. That’s what I had this past Saturday at Kunio Restaurant when I went out with some of my friends from work. And raising the bar on the fun-o-meter were the husbands who we all get along with.

Getting to the photos, I have shots of what the two of us ordered. He had the combination teishoku with sashimi and yakitori. If you see the picture of the sashimi above, he let me have both pieces of salmon and one piece of maguro in exchange for 3 pieces of my tempura…score! Below is the chicken yakitori skewered with bell peppers and onions.

Kunio Yakitori

I had the combination teishoku with vegetable tempura and miso butterfish. The vegetable tempura included 2 pieces each of onion, bell pepper, eggplant, carrot, and potato. That’s a lot, even after I gave away three pieces!

Kunio Teishoku

And the miso butterfish here is always a great cut with hardly any bones. It’s so moist and tasty, it just melts in your mouth!

Kunio Miso Butterfish

Teishoku dinners come with miso soup, salad, and a small appetizer. Prices range from about $14.00 – $20.00. The ones we had above were on the lower end of the price range…a very good deal!

Hi rowena,
Yup, love that miso butterfish! There was a time we were so addicted to Kunio’s that we ate there every single week! We got it a little more under control now, just once a month. ;)

Hi kat,
Wow, so is miso butterfish a Hawaii thing? I always thought it was Japanese from Japan. Hmmmm….

There are different fishes covered with miso, but not butterfish. Don’t think we have butterfish here.

Hi kat,
Outside of Hawaii it might also be known as black cod or sablefish. Any of those sound familiar in Japan?

Hi Erin,
Thanks for stopping by! It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it. :D

Hi Ashley,
I stopped by your site and really enjoyed it! You go to a lot of the same places that I like. And it’s so funny that we ordered the exact same thing at Kunio – they do have great tempura! :D

Butterfish is called Gindara in Japan.

Hope this helps! Aloha!

Hi Janine,
Thanks! I’ve been wondering about this. :D
