Kikuya Restaurant

Kikuya Butterfish

Kikuya is one of our regular stops when we’re in Kaneohe around dinner time. This is where we ate this past weekend when we were hanging out on the windward side.

Kikuya offers a good variety of Japanese food at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is very – how shall I put it – family style…maybe old school…definitely casual, compared to some of the other Japanese restaurants we go to.

Kikuya Restaurant

As I was saying, we’re normally here for dinner – typically after a day of fishing on the windward side. You’d see us trying to pull ourselves together in the car so that it didn’t look like we just rolled up off the beach. But today we were in Kaneohe for an afternoon of shopping so no primping in the car needed before going in for lunch.

Kikuya Menu

The specials above come with miso soup and tsukemono.

Kikuya Miso Soup

Kikuya Tsukemono

I had the misoyaki butterfish/tempura combo and he had the chicken katsu/tempura combo.

Kikuya Katsu

Both combos were very good. As a note, if you are looking for a miso butterfish with strong miso flavoring, this might not be the choice for you. This reminds me more of a plain fried or grilled butterfish…which I personally love. With a squeeze of lemon, it is so melt in your mouth delicious!

What a great place and a great-looking meal Lori. Amazing how I can see so many food pics all over the net, but the stuff from back home are those that always get to me. This time, the tsukemono did it…I could just taste it in my mouth!

Hi rowena,
Thanks, it’s great to know these pics are being enjoyed on the other side of the world! :)

Hi kat,
I think you’d like it, it’s very laid back…family style kind of place. ;)

I live in Kaneohe and love Kikuya. Always fresh and well prepared. I’m glad to see you sharing it.

I heard about this place the food looks so ono and the prices are dirt cheap. Compare to other japanese restaurant. I have got to try Kikuya one of these days!
