Happy Birthday: The legal one

Birthday Cake

This weekend we celebrated my grandma’s birthday. She turned an amazing 96 years old this past December! December…um this is June, you say? Here’s the thing, my grandma was born in Hawaii way back in 1911. From what I understand, back then it took a while for the government to register births. So she was born in December, but her legal birthday (when it was registered) is in late May.

I have no idea when the system finally got to the point where you could have your legal birthday be your real birthday. All I know is my grandma always had two birthdays. On the bright side, you get to celebrate two birthdays with this old system. And lucky for me cause birthday parties mean good food! Here is a small sampling of our birthday luncheon food.

Birthday Lunch

Starting from the top left going clockwise we have: lettuce wrap chicken filling, boneless minute chicken chow mein with ong choi, fish fillet with shoyu ginger and onion, roast duck from Chinatown, rice, and spicy ahi poke. I ate WAY too much!

Birthday Cake

My aunty brought this chocolate cake from Saint Germain Bakery. We didn’t want to cause a fire hazard, so the white candle represents 90 years. Happy Birthday Grandma!

that is so cool that your grandma is 96! my grandpa had 2 birthdates too. no matter which one we tried to celebrate he would always say that his birthday was the other date. Happy Birthday!!
