Kalua Turkey Lettuce Wraps

If you’re a fan of kalua pig – you know that pig that gets cooked in the ground at Hawaiian luaus – then you may want to try its healthier cousin, kalua turkey. This version basically tastes like roast turkey with a very nice smoky aroma and taste.
KALUA TURKEY PREPARATION
At the market, find a pack of frozen turkey hindquarters (thigh and drumstick part of the turkey). Disjoint the pieces so it fits in your crock pot. Season with salt and about 1 tablespoon of liquid smoke.
Slow cook on high for about 5 hours (or low for 8 to 10 hours) – or until meat falls off the bone. When your turkey is done, skim off the fat from the broth, discard the skin, and shred up your ready to eat juicy meat.
THE LETTUCE WRAP PART
Put some hoisin sauce on to your lettuce leaf. Place some kalua turkey on to that and finally add some sliced green onions to finish it off. Enjoy!

looks like my kind of summer food!
too bad I haven’t seen turkey around here…
This looks and sounds incredible!
Hey kat,
You could also try it with chicken. Sometimes I buy the premade kalua chicken at the store. Or to make it, it would probably be just like making roast chicken at home.
Hi noble pig,
Thanks!
That turkey lettuce wrap looks really nice.
We’ve never had Kalua pig, but are certain that we would be HUGE fans of it when we do have it one day! Why doesn’t my sis introduce us to this stuff? This is on my list for when we go visit her again!
But in the mean time, your turkey version will do just fine!
Great idea as I don’t make turkey very often. Looks good!
Hey Kevin and Lisa,
Thanks!
Hi White On Rice Couple,
I hope you get to come visit the islands soon!
yum! what a great healthier alternative!
This looks so delicious, and extremely easy! Two of my favorite things.
Liquid smoke is another item on my “shopping list” for when I go back to visit. Can’t believe how much I’d miss having it on hand in my flavorings/spices stash. This looks just perfect for hot summer weather — great idea Lori!
Hi Lauren,
Glad you like the idea!
Hi there Elle,
Those are also two of my favorite things!
Hey rowena,
Yup the lettuce did make it taste very refreshing, great for the rising temperature over here.
