Easy Healthier Taco Salad

Tonight I just checked out the Taco Bell website. Did you know that it listed the Fiesta Taco Salad as having 840 calories and 45 grams total fat? Yikes! So much for salads as being healthy.
Don’t worry too much. It looks like a big chunk of those numbers come from the shell bowl. The Fiesta Taco Salad without the shell has just 470 calories and 24 grams total fat. So enjoy the taco salad, just don’t eat that shell.
Although I’m sure I’ll still get the Taco Bell Taco Salad every once in a while, I thought it would be better tonight to just make my own at home. Here’s what I came up with…

INGREDIENTS
Lean ground turkey
Potato
Taco seasoning and water
Lettuce
Tomato
2% shredded cheese
Low fat sour cream

If you’re on the run, try wrapping it up in a whole wheat tortilla. Either way this is a tasty and much healthier meal!

yummy mexican! wish there were more places around here.
I love Taco salad and this one looks good! Yeah those deep fried bowls are outta control calorie wise!
Hey kat,
I wish we had more places here too!
Hey noble pig,
Thanks, I really enjoyed it!
Yikes! Even 24g of fat in that TB salad seems like a lot! I bet your home-cooked version is even better and far more healthy! I’m happy to find another Hawaii blogger, especially one interested in healthy eating!
Hi michelle,
Yes, 24 g of fat still is quite a bit…especially for a salad. It was nice to meet you and fun checking out your blog. Thanks for stopping by!
mmmm..taco salad. yours looks good. i should try adding potato to mine. usually i”m tired after work and i just cook and flavor up those boca burger bits (i don’t know what they are called, but it’s ground up soy). it’s easy than cooking meat and healthy.
I’m wondering if putting calorie info on the site is detrimental to sales or ?? (hee hee) Even 24 grams of fat sounds like a LOT! Your version looks way better.
Hi lauren,
Using those soy pieces sounds like a great idea! I had them once in chili and thought they were pretty good.
Hey rowena,
I bet it doesn’t affect sales too much. The super healthy people avoid those places regardless. And people like me who check it still spend money there, just on slightly healthier options. Except for those certain items where even though I know they’re bad, I just can’t help myself!
That looks delicious as always! This is a good way to personalize my mexican food because I do not like beans.
I really like making my own taco salads! Yours looks nice and tasty!
Hey jenny,
I’m also not a strong fan of beans, I have to be in the mood.
Hi Kevin,
Aren’t they great to make at home, that way you don’t feel guilty afterwards!
wow, that’s a ton of calories! thanks for sharing your healthier version, I feel lighter already!
Hi White On Rice Couple,
