Rainbow Drive In and Satura Cakes: Our Saturday Grindz!

Rainbow Drive In

We had some errands to run near Kaimuki yesterday so we timed it that we could have lunch over at Rainbow Drive In. :D

Although it was pretty late - around 2:00 pm - it was still packed with no tables open. I was hungry and didn’t want to hover around to snag a table so we just hopped into the car and ate in there.

I had a chili and rice bowl ($2.50)

and some of his mix plate - teri beef, chicken cutlet, fish, rice, mac salad ($6.50)

I really love Rainbow’s chili. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever gone there without getting it! My orders seem to revolve around the chili plate, chili bowl, chili bowl and sandwich, or chili dog plate!

After satisfying our Rainbow’s craving and running our errands, we stopped by Ward Center to do a little window shopping. I haven’t been there for quite some time but I knew there was one place I wanted to check out.

For my birthday last year, one of my coworkers bought me this awesome chocolate cake from Satura Cakes. In my … years of life, this was definitely the most delicious birthday cake I’ve ever had! I had to see what else this shop had to offer.

Satura Cakes

In the display case I saw my chocolate cake but it looked a little different with nuts on top. Mine last year had fruits like blueberries and raspberries on top - it matched really nicely with the dark chocolate!

Yesterday we decided to go for these individual desserts that sell for $3.95 each.

Satura Cakes Berry Blue Parfait

We shared the Berry Blue Parfait. In the description it says this is a low fat yogurt mousse with a blueberry compote, soft sponge cake and fresh blueberries. It was really, really good!

Hi Lisa and noble pig,
Yup, going to Satura Cakes was a great afternoon treat. I can’t wait to go back and try something else! :D

That chili bowl looks very tempting at this moment but I think it was the mention of *rice* that particularly got to me. Rice as in island-style rice and not this jasmine stuff, or heaven forbid, risotto rice that I have to make do with. It’s just not the same!

Satura cakes should open a shop on Kauai! With the stuff they offer they’d clean up!

Hey rowena,
I give you credit, I can hardly take going 2 weeks without rice (or shoyu) when I go on trips to the mainland or Europe!

Hey lauren,
It’s nice to hear that my eating out posts help you out! :D

Hi jenny,
Yeah, you should try it. At least a small chili bowl when you’re in need of a snack. ;)

Okay, I had to break down and go to Rainbow for the mixed plate, so ono! I appreciated the old style chicken cutlet, although mine didn’t come with gravy. Do you have to ask for the gravy? (If I’m gonna be bad, I’ll be bad all the way!)

Hey Darrell,
My husband says hi and that he has to order it “gravy all over”. I think it used to be free in the old days but now its something like $0.30 extra. I always look at him like he’s crazy (all that fried food, mac salad, gravy, etc.) but he says it’s the only way to go! :D
