Foodbuzz 24, 24, 24: Thanksgiving in Hawaii

Thanksgiving Table

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

This post is part of the Foodbuzz 24, 24, 24 event. 24 meals, within 24 hours, in 24 blog posts. Here at Made Healthier, we are one of the 24 featured blog posts!

Slippers

So please, drop your slippers at the door and come on in…

For Thanksgiving we went over to my mom’s house as we do every year to indulge in some lunchtime grinds. It was a good time with relatives…and lots and lots of food!

Here in Hawaii, parties usually have all different kinds of food from many different cultures. And the Thanksgiving party is no different.

We did have the traditional Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes

Thanksgiving Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

But we also had…

Lumpia

Lumpia (Filipino) – My aunty made these, always a favorite with a little shoyu and hot mustard sauce. These are really time consuming to make, so thanks aunty!

Chow Mein Noodles

Tofu with Black Mushrooms and Vegetables over chow mein noodles (Chinese)

Gau Gee

Crispy Gau Gee (Chinese)

Ahi Poke

Spicy and Limu Ahi poke (Hawaiian) – Spicy Ahi is raw tuna with mayo and tobiko fish eggs. Limu Poke is again raw tuna but with a crunchy seaweed and other seasonings. In my opinion, ahi poke is a must at any party!

Tako Poke

Also ono was the tako (octopus) and raw crab poke!

Raw Crab Poke

As for Japanese food we had…

Makizushi

Makizushi

Tempura

Shrimp tempura

Nishime

and Nishime, simmered vegetables in a soy sauce and sugar broth.

We were so stuffed! In addition to the foods above, there was also smoked turkey legs, Zippy’s chili and chicken, vegetable sticks, and macaroni potato salad. All that food just barely fit on the dining table!

Now that the look at our lunch is over, how about a peek around the front and backyard?

Papaya Trees

Let’s see…we have some papaya trees (above), a tangerine tree, and an orange tree (below).

Orange Tree

A mix of some Hawaiian plants…

Pink Ginger

Yellow Flower

Plumeria Flower

And some orchids…these were the ones currently in bloom.

New Orchid

Dad's Orchid

And don’t worry I didn’t forget about dessert! We had the traditional custard and pumpkin pies.

Pumpkin and Custard Pies

Along with Lilikoi (Passion fruit) Chiffon Pie from Hamura’s on Kauai…

Hamura's Lilikoi Chiffon Pie

And Guava Chiffon Cake!

Guava Cake

I really liked the lilikoi chiffon pie that my cousin brought back from Kauai, it was so light and fluffy!

I hope you all had fun taking a look at our Thanksgiving in Hawaii, and I wish you all a safe holiday season!

Dear Lori,

I’m booking tickets for next year’s Thanksgiving to crash your mom’s Thanksgiving party. Haha :-)

Seriously…I LOVE everything. Now this is my kind of Thanksgiving — with lumpia! And all the other seafood. :-) I miss poke!

Thanks for sharing the photos, though. Oh god, I miss Hawaii.

Hi A Maui Blog,
Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for stopping by!

Hi White On Rice Couple,
You know what’s funny, many of the papaya trees around here just pop up and start growing all on their own!

Hi Joie de vivre,
Thanks, and your Thanksgiving meal looked great as well! :)
