Jaboticaba!

Jaboticaba Tree

Kat was right with her guess of japotecaba (sounds close enough to me), good eye Kat!

Jaboticaba is a fruit that grows on a tree or bush and is native to Brazil. It has an interesting habit of growing right on the trunk and limbs of the tree! The fruit sort of reminds me of a grape, with a similar mildly sweet, whitish pulp.

In the photo above is the jaboticaba tree in my parents’ yard. I used to think it was pretty weird looking with the fruits growing right on the limbs…reminded me of warts! I have, however, come to appreciate this interesting fruit.

Recently my parents’ tree has been producing a whole lot of fruit, and my mom has been making a ton of jelly with it!

Jaboticaba Jelly

Today I finally had some on a toasted sourdough English muffin for an after work snack.

In case you’re interested, I’ve also had a red wine blended with jaboticaba from Volcano Winery on the Big Island which was really good. Stop by their tasting room if you’re ever in the area!

I’ll be on the Big Island for Christmas so I’ll have to stop by Volcano winery and try it. The fruits almost look shiny on the outside?

Hey kat,
That’s cool that your mom makes jaboticaba jelly too! I wonder what else it can be used for….

Hi Joie de vivre,
