Fat Boy’s Local Drive-In

What is a review on a place called Fat Boy’s Local Drive-In doing on Made Healthier?! I know, I couldn’t bring myself to eat at Fat Boy’s for a very long time. But it seemed like everyone around me, especially this year, has been telling me about how much they enjoy eating here. And they all said, don’t let the name put you off. So when Fat Boy’s recently opened a new restaurant in Waipio, I finally and reluctantly gave it a go.

Don Quijote Sushi and Poke

Sorry for the increase in “Eating Out” posts. I haven’t had as much time to cook this week. But I did manage some new recipes that I have coming up in the next several days. Until then, some raw fish.
I think I’m going to start shopping more often at Don Quijote. Especially if I can come home with these delicious and affordable snacks. Here we have unagi sushi, maguro sushi, and shoyu poke. This and a salad and/or miso soup makes for a great dinner!

Highway Inn, Waipahu

I’ll be leaving soon to go off on an adventure for a little while. I won’t be gone too long, and when I come back I’ll hopefully have lots of pictures and stories to share. If you leave a comment during this time, I promise to get to it just as soon as I can. In the mean time I’ve scheduled some posts to go up while I’m away from the computer. Enjoy!
Highway Inn is where I head off to whenever I’m craving Hawaiian food or beef stew in particular. And if I’ve been eating healthy during the past week I have no guilt at all in stopping by for a combo plate. The picture above shows my usual order, beef stew combo ($8.75). It comes with beef stew, pipikaula, haupia, rice or poi, and mac salad or lomi salmon. I really like the beef stew’s creamy texture, tangy taste, and soft pieces of beef. Although I often stick to this usual order, Highway Inn offers so much more.

Shirokiya and Tenkaippin
Woke up at a decent hour this past Saturday for a change. Went off to spend the morning and early afternoon at a work function.
After that we were off to Ala Moana Shopping Center and a late afternoon snack at Shirokiya.

I had the Yakitori Chicken Bento and he had this selection of musubis and karaage chicken.

To burn off some calories we went window shopping for a while then found a nice spot to rest with this view.

After that we were off to eat…again – dinner at Tenkaippin on Kapahulu Ave.

We’ve seen this in commercials so he wanted to try it, the Kotteri Ramen (thick chicken based broth)

I had the Assari Ramen (shoyu ramen)

We also shared an order of fried chicken and gyoza to round out the meal.

It’s a pretty good weekend when your biggest worry is…where to eat next?
