Kauai Fishing

Kauai Fishing

After our quick visit to Waimea Pier, we headed to a beach near Poipu to do a little fishing. If you remember our last fishing adventure with the homemade fishing rod, I actually still had that in the car and brought it out to try again. We also now had our normal fishing rod and tackle as well.

Kauai Monk Seal

On the way to the fishing grounds we passed by a napping Hawaiian Monk Seal.

Then made it to a nice little rocky area.

We didn’t have much time here, just enough to enjoy the view, bring up several small fish, and let them go again back to where they came from. Still, it was a great end to a really fun day!

Waimea Pier

Waimea Pier, Kauai

After driving down from Waimea Canyon we made a 30 minute stop at Waimea Pier.

We hadn’t been to Waimea Pier since the crazy aweoweo run in 2003. Back then you just dropped your line down and up came an aweoweo in 5 seconds max!

Today however was a different story, no luck for us or the lady who was leaving as we arrived.

Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza…and fishing!

Pau Hana Pizza

After brunch at Hamura’s, we made our way around the island to Kilauea and the Kong Lung Center. Here we stopped by to check out Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza. I had been wanting to try the pizza so we shared the veggie slice above. I really enjoyed it and loved that they had artichoke hearts as a topping!

After that quick snack we continued driving around stopping at some beaches…

And did a little impromptu hand pole fishing on the side of the road.

Kupipi

We picked up some line, small hooks, and a couple shrimp at Foodland – then tied in on a stick I found at the beach (since we didn’t bring our poles with us)! It looked pretty funny but it worked!

Fishing and a bite to eat at Kua Aina

Summer Beach

It’s been a catch and release kind of week. Meaning, we haven’t been able to bring anything up worthy of the dinner table recently. On most days the only bite I get is of whatever I have for lunch. So sad.

However, there have been a couple hook ups. At the first beach (picture above) I brought up a little eel in the afternoon. Disappointed without any fish, we tried some simple handpole fishing and picked up a kupipi…

Kupipi

and a bunch of mamo. All went quickly back into the water to enjoy another day.

Mamo

At this other place we tried, there were a lot of nibbles on the line but no big bites. Continue reading →

Night Fishing: Checking out the south shore

Diamond Head at Night

By the time we got up and going the other day, it was pretty late. And what else to do but go night fishing! I really enjoy this because it’s so much cooler and no chance of sunburn!

It was a slow night though, not too many bites. At least it was a really beautiful night. Above is a shot of the south shore with Diamond Head on the right. That was my view during this evening of fishing.

Fishing in Hawaii: Weke Day

Hawaii Beach

Boy was it hot yesterday! Even slathered in sunblock and with a hat I ended up a little red today. Oh well, we had a really fun day out with my mom so it was worth it.

My haul for the day were three weke (goatfish). Two were about 8 inches while the biggest one was a little over a foot long. That is the biggest weke I’ve ever caught in my life. Check it out!

Weke

To prepare the fish: scale, clean out the insides, make a couple slice marks on each side, flavor with a little salt and sliced ginger, then steam until cooked through.

This was steamed on a ti leaf (but it’s not necessary if you don’t have any). When it was done cooking all it needed was a dash of soy sauce and it was ready to eat!
